The Mask of Herne

Brittany, 845 AD.

Its years since the death of the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne and the order that he brought to a chaotic period in history has long since evaporated. His Sons and Grandsons have divided the Empire into two Kingdoms, East and West and have fought a 3 year war with each other over the right to themselves Emperor.

In Brittany the formidable Breton's are testing the West Frankian border, raiding into Neustria to take and hold more land from the distracted West Frankian King, Charles the Bald.

At the Battle of Ballon in November of that year, 3000 Frankish soilders under King Charles's banner marched into the northern wetlands and met the out numbered Breton's under the leadership of a local lord called Nominoe and so saw the rise of a united Brittany and its first Duke.

But on the eve of that battle, Alric, an elite warrior and friend to Nominoe's children dreams of all of their deaths and watches as Ankou, cloaked and hungry feasting on the souls of the dead as they lay rotting in the battles aftermath. Erispoe the lords son assures him that it is just a dream but Alric is not so sure.
